Just southwest of Exeter, the village of Ide offers a serene escape into the heart of Devon’s countryside. With its rich history, charming architecture, and vibrant community spirit, Ide stands as a testament to the enduring allure of English village life. We were dropping off our child at university and picked a place not too central but close enough to stay for a couple of nights. Here is what we discovered.

Ide’s Past
The name “Ide” is believed to derive from Saint Ida of Herzfeld, to whom the village church is dedicated. This church, rebuilt in 1834, serves as a focal point for the community, reflecting both historical significance and architectural beauty. The village’s history is further enriched by the presence of a Roman fortlet or signal station on a nearby hilltop, indicating the area’s strategic importance in ancient times.

Village Life and Community
Ide’s close proximity to Exeter, separated by the A30 dual carriageway, allows it to maintain a distinct identity while benefiting from nearby urban amenities. The village boasts two traditional pubs: the Poacher’s Inn and the Huntsman Inn. The Poacher’s Inn, housed in an 18th-century building, offers a cosy atmosphere with various dining areas tucked away in charming cubby-holes. The Huntsman Inn, a 16th-century thatched pub, provides a friendly and inviting setting, serving home-cooked meals and a selection of local ales.

Exploring the Surroundings
Ide’s picturesque setting offers numerous opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The surrounding countryside is crisscrossed with walking trails that meander through lush fields and woodlands, providing stunning views and a chance to immerse oneself in nature. The nearby Fordland Brook, with its quaint ford at College Lane, adds to the village’s rustic charm.

Thatched Roof Dwellings and Pub
One of the most enchanting features of Ide is its collection of traditional thatched roof cottages, nestled along quiet lanes and tucked between blossoming hedgerows. These picturesque homes, with their thick straw roofs and whitewashed or cob walls, reflect the village’s timeless charm and connection to its rural Devon roots. Their rustic beauty makes Ide feel like a living postcard from the past, where history and countryside serenity meet. Among these characterful buildings is the Huntsman Inn, a 16th-century thatched pub that’s as inviting inside as it is iconic from the outside—offering a warm welcome, hearty meals, and a true taste of village hospitality.

Stream Running in front of a row of cottages
In one of Ide’s most idyllic corners, a gentle stream runs peacefully along the lane, weaving its way past a charming row of old cottages. The water sparkles in the sunlight, bordered by mossy stone walls, overhanging greenery, and flowering plants. It adds a soothing soundtrack to the scene—just the soft trickle of water and birdsong in the air—enhancing the village’s timeless, countryside character. It’s the kind of place where you instinctively slow down, pause, and soak in the quiet beauty.
