We have been to Sai Kung in Exeter and Sai Kung on College Green, Bristol for Dim Sum. Not long after, both those restaurants closed. The latter turned into a Hong Kong Style Cart Noodle place before moving to Nelson Street. Nestled on the ground floor of the Little Chinatown Complex on Nelson Street, Sai Kung Cafe is one of those rare finds that transport you straight to the bustling streets of Hong Kong. If you’re after authentic Cantonese comfort food, this unassuming little eatery is a must-visit.
Having spent time in Hong Kong and experiencing the food culture firsthand, I was eager to see if this cafe lived up to the nostalgic flavors I know and love.
First Impressions
Sai Kung Cafe is more of a casual canteen than a fine dining restaurant, which adds to its charm. The decor is simple, but the aroma of freshly roasted meats and simmering broths fills the air, making it clear that the focus here is on the food. On our visit, the cafe was relatively quiet—a stark contrast to the lively queues I’ve heard about during peak hours. Despite the unpretentious setting, what truly matters here is what’s on the plate.
Authentic, Satisfying, and Full of Flavour: What We Ordered
We decided to go for some of their most popular dishes, all of which are staples in Cantonese cuisine:
- Three Roast Rice – Roast Duck, Crispy Roast Pork, and Char Siu Pork
- Beef Brisket with Flat Rice Noodle
- Tan Tan Noodle with Minced Pork and Chili
- Jasmine Tea to Share

Three Roast Rice
This dish is everything you want in a Cantonese roast platter. The roast duck had a rich, deep flavor with that perfect layer of crispy skin. The crispy pork belly was a standout—melt-in-your-mouth fat balanced with a shatteringly crisp crackling. The char siu pork was tender, sweet, and smoky. Everything was served on a generous portion of steamed rice, which soaked up all the delicious juices.

Beef Brisket with Flat Rice Noodle
A comforting bowl of slow-cooked beef brisket in a deeply aromatic broth, paired with silky flat rice noodles. The beef was tender and flavourful, absorbing all the fragrant spices of the broth. Each spoonful was hearty and warming, making it the perfect dish for a cold day.

Tan Tan Noodle with Minced Pork and Chili
This dish delivered a spicy and nutty kick, thanks to its flavorful sesame-peanut base and fragrant chili oil. The minced pork was well-seasoned and added a savory depth to the dish. The noodles had a good bite, soaking up all the sauce beautifully. If you enjoy bold flavours, this is a must-try. We have to warn you, it is not for the faint hearted, with all that chilli.

Service & Atmosphere
One of the things that stood out was how quick the service was. Everything is prepared in advance, ensuring that meals arrive promptly. While the space could benefit from a cosier, more inviting ambiance, the food more than makes up for it. This is the kind of place you visit for the flavors, not the aesthetics—and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
Why You Should Visit Sai Kung Cafe
Sai Kung Cafe on Nelson Street in Bristol is a hidden gem that brings the heart of Cantonese cuisine to the city centre. If you’re craving authentic Cantonese flavours that could easily rival those found in Hong Kong’s bustling street eateries, this is the place to go. From roast meats to noodle soups and wok-fried classics, every dish is bursting with bold, traditional taste.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the generous portion sizes. Whether you’re ordering a rice box, noodles, or a hearty bowl of congee, you can be sure you’ll leave full and satisfied—perfect for hungry diners looking for real value.
Speaking of value, Sai Kung Cafe offers excellent bang for your buck. In a time when prices in casual dining continue to climb, it’s refreshing to find a place that delivers both quality and quantity at an affordable rate. Add to that the fast and efficient service, and you’ve got a go-to spot for a quick lunch, casual dinner, or spontaneous food fix. Whether you’re a student, a city worker, or just exploring Bristol, Sai Kung Cafe is well worth a visit.

Final Thoughts
For those craving Hong Kong-style roast meats, comforting noodle soups, and bold, authentic flavours head over the San Kung Cafe. Whether you’re familiar with Cantonese cuisine or new to it, this spot is a fantastic place to indulge in classic dishes without breaking the bank. If you’re looking for no-fuss, delicious food that hits the spot, Sai Kung Cafe should be high on your list. I, for one, will definitely be returning—next time, I’ll be trying the wonton noodle soup and Hainanese chicken rice!
