Nothing beats freshly cooked fish and chip served on a plate. The crisp of the batter and crunchy chips make a big difference, compared to paper wrapped or boxed takeaways. We thought we give ourselves a treat on a Friday and invited a friend along to dine in at the White Row Fish and Chip.
White Row Fish & Chip
Over the Covid months, we frequented the White Row Fish & Chip Takeaway near Beckington just to get out for a change of scene and to enjoy some fresh air. We preferred their freshly cooked fish there but had to eat in the car because of lock down rules. Soon after, when we could mingle, albeit in small groups and at a distance for our own safety, we sat outside in the garden’s picnic tables, still eating out of takeout boxes.
To give ourselves a treat on a Friday, we made plans with a friend to visit the White Row Fish and Chip again, well and early for lunch. The award-winning chippy serves chunky fish with a crispy batter and home-grown chips.
We weren’t disappointed. The fish was really fresh, freshness that you can taste in every bite. The portion was big too, which is just as well as we were starving. I knew this was going to happen and wanted to bring a food container to take home what we couldn’t finish. Maybe next time.
You get a wide selection of fresh fish and seafood, as well as other tasty mains like homemade pie, Ham, Eggs and Chops, Beef Burger, Omelettes, Soup, Sandwiches and Salads from their cafe’s kitchen but we were there for one thing and one thing only, Fish a Chip.
The Lunch Deal
We decided that the quickest way would be to order the Lunch Special – Prime Cod Fillet, Chips and Mushy Peas from their menu. This is available from noon till 4pm. You can, of course, ask for your fish to be cooked in vegetable oil instead of beef dripping (the traditional way) or pan fried, but where is the fun in that?
As you can see from the photos below, the portion is huge, with the battered fish served on a ‘bed’ of fries. Our friend struggled to finish her meal and thought that what was left would have been more than enough for tonight. Then again, she was so full, she was going to skip the meals for the rest of the day.
What We Liked & What Would Make It Better
What we liked about the Lunch Special is the inclusion of the Mushy Peas. If you order your fish and chip from the standard section of the menu, not only is it more expensive, but it does not come with mushy peas. This is sold separately as a side.
What would make the meal complete is tartare sauce. This was a sold as a side with other options like Curry Sauce, Home Made Gravy, Garlic Aioli, Coleslaw and Salad. Well, at least we got our tomato ketchup and mayonnaise and vinegar for our chips at no charge.
Would We Go Back Again
Definitely. While there are chippies with takeout and a dining area near where we are, we would still make the journey. There are plenty of parking, a gift shop, a vintage shop, the farm shop and playground to keep the kids entertained. We are tempted to go back again to try out other seafood and fishes.
