Food halls, sometimes also known as food courts are common in Asia. Modern, clean and spacious, they can be found in shopping malls, local markets or independently on their own. Unlike restaurants and cafes on the high street, these are stalls offering a variety of food found under one roof.
What are Food Courts (Food Halls)
Think street food but in a more organised and clean atmosphere away from traffic and fumes. These small stalls are let out to independent cooks and small businesses, each bringing their own style of cooking and food. The advantage is there are plenty of dishes from different parts of the world to choose from under one roof, each prepared by expert chefs from the regions.
Unlike a restaurant, there are no waitresses or table service. You decide what you want, order and pay for it at the stall then pick it up when they are ready. With your food and drinks on a tray, you carefully navigate your way to the seating area and enjoy your meal. When you finish, you can either clear up the table and put away the cutleries and tableware in a designated area or leave it to the cleaners.
The system helps to keep cost down and stalls are able to offer cooked meals at reasonable prices. Patrons on the other hand, can choose from a variety of dishes, not necessarily limited to one stall. For instance, you can have starter, main, dessert and drinks from different stalls. You can even mix it up and have only starters and desserts. The choice is yours.
