A Glimpse into History
Originally part of a manor house estate, Manor Gardens was home to the Ducarel family in the 18th century and later to Mr. Charles Prettejohn. The manor, a prominent structure set into Chapel Hill with extensive cellars beneath, was demolished in 1894 as it was in a poor state. However, remnants like the cellars, which served as air raid shelters during World War II, still whisper tales of the past . Some of these cellars still exists today under Chapel Hill.
In 1893, the local council leased the gardens from the Rolle Estate for public enjoyment. In 1894 the local board successfully leased the gardens for £50 a year. Rolle Estate also donated £50 a year to help with the upkeep of the gardens. The grounds were laid out and planted in 1897 at a cost of £1200.

By 1907, the entire area was officially transferred to the council with a stipulation: it should remain an open space, free from development. No housing should be built there. A bandstand was erected, costing £1000. The gardens first came into public use in September 1896 with a band playing every day during the summer. Some of the UK’s top performers played their concerts here.
Ninon and her Follies performed for several seasons at the Manor Gardens in the 1950s. In 1930s, Evelyn Hardy and her ladies band performed in the garden seven nights a week – on a Friday. The audience were given a chance to show their talents at the evening performances.
The grounds were made larger in 1905 when the quarter-acre kitchen garden of the Imperial Hotel was taken over.
