After a hearty full English breakfast at the ‘my fine deli‘ on High Street, Glastonbury, we set out to explore the shops and historical landmarks. We have heard a lot about the area, its spiritual significance and the mystical and spiritual shops in the areas. On a dry and bright winters day we decided to explore the High Street in Glastonbury.
The High Street in Glastonbury is a vibrant blend of history, spirituality, and culture. Famous for its rich mythological and historical connections to King Arthur, the Holy Grail, and early Christianity, this charming street is also home to an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, and historical landmarks. Here you will find spiritual enlightenment, artisanal goods, or a glimpse into the past. We started from the top of the street at the Glastonbury Market Cross and work our way down from there starting visiting the landmarks and the shops. Historical Landmarks
1. Market Cross
Standing proudly on Glastonbury High Street, the Market Cross is a historic monument dating back to the 15th century. Originally a focal point for local markets and gatherings, this stone cross embodies the town’s medieval heritage. While partially restored over the centuries, it remains a striking reminder of Glastonbury’s vibrant past and serves as a popular meeting spot and photo opportunity for visitors exploring the High Street.
2. The George and Pilgrims Hotel
Dating back to the 15th century, this historic inn is an architectural gem with a storied past. It is said to have hosted pilgrims visiting Glastonbury Abbey and is rumored to be haunted, adding to its mystique.
3. The Glastonbury Tribunal
Located on the High Street, The Tribunal is a 15th-century stone building that once served as a merchant’s house and courthouse. It was probably built and rented out by the Abbey. The facade has several 16th century elements including the first floor bay window, and the carved Tudor Rose and Royal Arms. The interior has features of recycled structures from the Abbey buildings long after the closure of the monastry. It now houses the Glastonbury Lake Village Museum, which showcases artefacts from an Iron Age settlement nearby and the site is managed by Glastonbury Antiquarian Society.
4. St. John the Baptist Church
This stunning medieval church is one of the oldest buildings in Glastonbury, dating back to the 15th century. Its soaring tower and serene interior make it a beautiful and contemplative stop along the High Street.
5. Glastonbury Abbey
Although technically just off the High Street, no visit to Glastonbury would be complete without exploring the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. Steeped in legend, this historic site is believed to be the burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. During our visit the main entrance next to the town hall was shut. One has to make their way to pass the Information Center, Car Park and Public Conveniences on Magdalene Street to a separate entrance. It was in the middle of Winter and was really windy so we decided to put this off for another time.

6. Chalice Well Garden (Near the High Street)
While not on the High Street, the Chalice Well Garden is a short walk away and provides a tranquil retreat. This sacred spring is associated with spiritual healing and the legend of the Holy Grail. This is also a landmark for another time as we weren’t quite prepared this time aroun.
